Charlie Sheard

Initially Charlie Sheard's striking use of colour and bold combinations are what grabs one's attention. He balances aesthetics and energy to create emotion and rhythm using bright, metallic and luminescent pigments, as well as muted  and vivid hues. Beyond these qualities is Sheard's mastery of texture. His works are composed of overlapping layers of thick impasto, misty washes and tonal depth, whilst still allowing for moments where the texture of the support is visible. This ability to convey materiality and movement is founded upon his studies in performance art at university and spending seven years living in Cambridge, where he simultaneously became acquainted with historical European masterworks and the 20th century painting scene in the UK. Sheard also draws inspiration from Chinese landscape works from the Song and Yuan dynasties, where painting was used to convey ephemerality and self-expression, respectively.

Sheard's abstract compositions have led to over fifty solo exhibitions in Australia, Europe, the USA and China. His works have been acquired by a number of institutions, including the Museum of Old and New Art (Tasmania), The World Bank (New York), University of Cambridge (UK) and Deakin University (Melbourne), among other public, private and corporate collections nationally and abroad. A testament to Sheard's significant career, curator Terence Maloon devised the survey show Charlie Sheard, Ten Years of Pure Abstraction, 2006 to 2016, which was on view in late 2016 at the Drill Hall Gallery (ANU) in Canberra. Having produced work consistently since the early 1980s, this display of Sheard's more recent works brought to light his prolific ability to manipulate and arrange abstract forms, whilst also signifying that his interest in visually capturing and interpreting gestures, sensations and poetry is ongoing.
