Among the works on paper, glass and video that visitors to the Dobell Australian Drawing Biennial in 2014 encountered was a gigantic boulder from the state's far west, installed by artist Peter Sharp and evoking the show's landscape theme.

This year's theme - artists' personal narratives of memory and life - aims to reflect a more interior experience.

Lewer's portraits will appear alongside Maria Kontis's hyper-real pastel drawings of found photographs, Noel McKenna's portraits of domestic and wild animals, Jumaadi's cast of mythical beasts and characters, Nyapanyapa Yunupingu's stories of everyday life in Yirrkala and Catherine O'Donnell's "Inhabited Space" 2015-16, an almost full-scale depiction of a fibro house rendered, in part, directly onto the gallery wall. Despite such disparate subject matter, drawing is fundamental to the practice of each artist.
