Artist Todd Fuller to feature body of work "mayor of Shelly Beach" on Harry Thompson at Sydney exhibition

THERE'S a special kind of magic outside of Australia's metropolitan areas and artist Todd Fuller found it in Port Macquarie.

Mr Fuller was an artist in residence at the Glasshouse in 2018 and used the "mayor of Shelly Beach" Harry Thompson as his muse for an exhibition of works in February.

He has now taken that body of work, including a film about Harry, for an exhibition at the May Space gallery Sydney entitled "A Place Not Like Home".

"These places, often remote, sometimes shrinking in population, sprinkled with architectural structures of of the past and communities rich with quirk and charm, are a catalyst for unique Australian stories," Mr Fuller said.

"These stories, and in a way these places, are a delicate balance of the bittersweet, the resilient and the bleak."

A Place Not Like Home brings together two hand-drawn animations by Mr Fuller which draw from regional and rural experiences as the stimulus for storytelling and considering the Australian fringe experience.

Mr Fuller has exhibited annually with the Sydney gallery since 2011 having graduated from Sydney's National Art School the previous year. He has been awarded a number of residencies that have informed and developed his work, including time spent recently at Bundanon Trust (2018), Hill End (2017) and Grafton Regional Art Gallery (2016).

The hand-drawn animation developed during his Grafton residency, Ode to Clarence, won the notable Jacaranda Acquisitive Drawing Award in 2018.

Most recently, Mr Fuller was selected as a finalist in the 2019 Sulman Prize at the Art Gallery of NSW for his hand drawn animation, With Whom I Was United by Every Tie (Captain Moonlite).

Mr Fuller's practice is multi-disciplinary and multi-faceted. His video artworks have portrayed narratives concerned with burden, freedom and iconography, with his most recent animations investigating perceptions of homosexuality, particularly within rural areas.

Mr Fuller's practice also includes the drawing stills from his films, and sculptures that bring the characters he develops into a three dimensional form.

His pieces have entered a number of collections, including Parliament House Art Collection, Artbank, Newcastle Art Gallery, Bathurst Regional Art Gallery, Grafton Regional Gallery, Maitland Regional Art Gallery, Gympie Regional Gallery, Deakin University Art Gallery, the Elliott Eyes Collection, and Sydney Harbour Trust Collection.
